Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
In accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and internationally accepted indexing standards, Computers and Electronics in Medicine (CEM) has established the following policy regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in scholarly publications.
Scope and Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure transparency, academic integrity, and ethical responsibility in the use of AI technologies during the research, writing, and publication process.
Permitted Use of AI
Authors may use AI-assisted tools (e.g., ChatGPT, large language models) solely for language editing and readability enhancement, such as improving grammar, clarity, and style. The use of AI for technical assistance must not alter the scientific content or interpretation of the research.
Prohibited Use of AI
Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies must not be used for:
- Creating original research content
- Designing research methodologies
- Generating or interpreting scientific results
- Drawing conclusions or making scientific claims
AI tools are not considered appropriate contributors to the intellectual or scientific core of a manuscript.
Authorship and Accountability
Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors, co-authors, or cited as references. Authorship implies accountability, responsibility, and the ability to respond to ethical and scientific concerns, criteria that AI technologies do not meet.
In line with COPE guidelines, authors are fully responsible for the entire content of their manuscript, including any sections produced with the assistance of AI tools, and are liable for issues such as plagiarism, data fabrication, factual inaccuracies, or ethical breaches.
Disclosure Requirement
Any use of AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation (writing support, image or graphical element creation, or data analysis) must be transparently disclosed at the time of submission.
A clear statement must be included in the Methods or Acknowledgements section specifying:
- The name of the AI tool used
- The purpose for which it was used
Editorial Oversight
The editorial board reserves the right to request additional clarification regarding the use of AI tools and may reject manuscripts if AI usage is deemed to compromise the originality, integrity, or ethical standards of the research.
